Natural Homemade Toothpaste: An Easy Recipe

Making your own natural toothpaste is quick and easy. With a few good ingredients you make a tasty paste to clean and care for your teeth!

Toothpaste – maybe the most essential of toiletries. Used at least twice a day it’s supposed to clean your teeth, freshen your breath and maybe even whiten the teeth. But do we really need all of the ingredients contained in commercially produced toothpaste? The ingredient list is long and contains more than a few questionable compounds. For me and my family a natural alternative is needed, one where I control the ingredients to ensure we have a safe and natural product that works.

What Should a Good Toothpaste Do?

  • Clean Teeth
  • Maintain Gums
  • Prevent cavities
  • Freshen Breath
  • Taste Good

Turns out, with just a few ingredients you can you easily make your own toothpaste at home that does everything a good toothpaste needs to. By using my favorite recipe below, you will no longer need to buy industrially manufactured toothpaste.

Ingredients for Homemade Toothpaste

  • Medicinal clay
  • Birch sugar – also known as xylitol, xylitol or Xucker – an alternative to sugar that is actually really good for your teeth!
  • A hydrolat / hydrosol of your choice. Hydrosols are herbal waters won from the distillation of herbs or flowers. They contain many beneficial ingredients and support a healthy oral flora. For a toothpaste I prefer rosemary hydrolat. Alternatively, you can also use very strong tea made from herbs or simply use distilled water.
  • Tincture – I prefer Lavender. A tincture is an alcoholic plant extract which contains the active ingredients of a plant. As an alternative, you can replace it but with the same amount of hydrolat or tea.
  • An empty ointment pot or tube for filling (eg this one)
  • Alcohol for disinfecting

Measures for this Toothpaste Recipe

With this recipe you get about 30ml or 1 fluid ounce of toothpaste. This will last two people about two weeks.

  • 5 teaspoons of medicinal clay
  • 1 teaspoon of birch sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of the tincture
  • 2 ½ teaspoons of your hydrolat

Directions for Homemade Toothpaste

  1. Clean all utensils and disinfect by wiping with a cloth soaked in alcohol
  2. Place ingredients in a small bowl
  3. Stir well with a spoon
  4. Let ingredients settle for a few minutes
  5. Stir again
  6. You should get a creamy paste. If you want a thicker paste consistency slowly add more medicinal clay or for a thinner creamy consistency slowly add more hydrolat.
  7. Finally put the finished toothpaste into your container.

Making your own natural toothpaste is quick and easy. With a few good ingredients you make a tasty paste to clean and care for your teeth!

Our tip: Prepare smaller quantities! This way you can do without additional preservatives. If you want to preserve it a little longer, you can add a few drops of lemon juice.

For use, store a small spoon near the toothpaste, so you don’t have to dip the toothbrush into the paste.

Brushing may feel a bit odd at first and will take a few tries to get used to, but brushing without foam and chemistry is definitely worth the switch and your teeth will be clean and you’ll have fresher breath.
