Aluminum Free Roll-On Deodorant – Make it yourself in a Few Minutes

Aluminum chloride and other aluminum compounds are the main ingredient in just about all antiperspirants and deodorants. They work because they are easily absorbed into the skin and block the sweat ducts, so you don’t sweat. The same reasons that make them work so well are what make them so bad for our health. While highly effective at suppressing sweat, they also interfere with the body’s natural detox ability and are linked to many illnesses and diseases including cancer.

Personally I prefer deodorants without aluminum, like this one. However they are often a bit more expensive and it is simply too easy to just make your own aluminium free deodorant!

While I support using natural products they can be expensive and I can’t justify spending the money when I can make my own. I’ve been making my own aluminium free deodorant in the kitchen and it works just as well as any product I can buy. When you make your own products you know exactly what is in them and can make sure they are natural and safe to use. Check out my recipe for an effective aluminum free roll-on deodorant:

Aluminum Free Roll-On Deodorant Ingredients:

  • Baking Soda
  • Cornstarch
  • Essential Oil for aroma – I like peppermint
  • Distilled Water
  • Empty Roll-On Deodorant Containers

How to Make Aluminum Free Roll-On Deodorant:

  1. Heat half a cup / 100 ml of distilled water and 2 teaspoons of baking soda in a small saucepan, stir until the baking soda is dissolved.
  2. In a small bowl dissolve 1-2 teaspoons of cornstarch in some water.
  3. Slowly add the cornstarch mixture to the hot water and soda solution.
  4. Bring everything to a boil and stir well.
  5. Let the mixture cool down, add about 6-8 drops of essential oil and stir well.
  6. Fill your roll-on empty deodorant containers.

Finished! Your homemade deodorant is ready to use! The result is great and it only costs a few cents to make. You can have fun making different scents by using your favorite essential oils or blends.

If you prefer a solid deodorant, check this recipe out.

Both recipes are perfect for people who prefer aluminium-free deodorants. Just as easily, you can make other household and personal care products yourself: quick, ecological and extremely inexpensive:

      Hello Anne,
We are sorry, all of our recipes and tutorials are for private use only. The deodorant lasts up to a few weeks if carefully prepared and taking hygiene into account. We recommend that you prepare it no more than six weeks in advance. More can be done at any time within minutes :-)

I have some aluminium tins in which I was going to store my homemade deodorant- would the deodorant absorb the aluminium??

yes, that’s possible although it may be a minor amount, or none at all. Sodium bicarbonate is weakly basic. For example, a teaspoon of lye in a cup of water will create a strong enough base (we call it high pH) to dissolve aluminum. it’s hard for me to say whether the pH in your deodorant would be high enough to etch into the aluminum. Stick a little piece of aluminum foil into your deodorant and check it periodically over the time you intend to store – look for tarnishing or other change in the aluminum foil to get your answer.

I forgot to mention that sodium bicarbonate is the same as baking soda.

  4. Can I not use local water instead of distilled?

Yes that’s possible. The difference is, with distilled water the risk ouf fouling (caused by microorganisms) is reduced and the product can be used longer.

  5. Hi, may i please know if i could add liquid germall plus for longer shelf life?

    Thank you so much.

We haven’t tried it, but that should work. Another method for preservation would be to add about 1 % ‘Biokons PA 30’. It’s a biological addon that works in a wide pH range from 3 to 10.

  6. ????TRUTHINESS????

Wouldn’t a better starch hold up? Like say Arrowroot powder? Cornstarch seems to break down quickly but how does this not leave you with powder on you?

  14. Can we add Aloe Vera gel also to it???

    Antworten
    • Hi Emma, we haven’t tried adding Aloe to this recipe, because it works very well already without it. Go ahead and give it a try and let us know, how it works for you :-) be mindful though that the added Aloe might increase the risk of mold forming, therefore start with a small amount.

  15. Hi, please how long will this keep outside the fridge before turning bad? Thanks

Hi, great recipe, I have only one question. Are you sure that you meant
100 ml of the water? Cause I’m not used to cups to be so small in the
recipes. Maybe you’ve meant 1 liter (1000 ml)?

    Antworten
    • Hi Helena, thank you for pointing this out. You are right this doesn’t match. For this recipe you actually only need 100 ml or a bit less than half a cup.

This may not seem like much, but most roll-ons don’t hold that much.

    • Helena Vymazalová

      Oh, great, thanks! :-)
